Front side scents and hard drive cooling
This is actually the most common variant. Here, both the air is sucked in and used for the direct cooling of the hard drives. This constellation is efficient and only gets into trouble when all slots have been fully equipped. However, the 3.5″ hard drives are disappearing more and more and the installation of 2.5″ HDD and SSD often takes place between the motherboard tray and the back. This is not useful, but in the age of overlong graphics cards mostly indispensable.
Let us now consider some practical examples, because hard drive temperatures far beyond the 30° should be avoided as much as possible in the interests of data security and durability of the hard drives. The classic par excellence: hard drive in a 3.5″ slot, behind a built-in 12cm front fan.
Front insert via SATA hotswap. The cooling succeeds indirectly via the fan above. Not quite as often to see, but still useful cooled.
Not commonplace: page slot. Here the airflow is already restricted and one should think about an additional ground fan and also hard drive fans.
Optimization
If you find that the hard drive temperatures are too high, you should consider a commercially available hard drive cooler if necessary. These coolers are to be sourced from well-assorted specialist retailers, but do not replace a well-considered planning in advance. Either you use an active hard drive cooler with fans…
… a passive model.
