With the new WAVE DX, streaming equipment supplier ELGATO enters the world of XLR microphones and aims to gain a foothold in the professional audio equipment market. The WAVE DX has been redesigned from the ground up and optimized for close miking, which should make it especially interesting for streamers and content creators. Read and listen to what the dynamic microphone can do in the test.
There are many prestigious names in the field of professional microphones. Røde, Sennheiser, Neumann and especially popular among streamers: the Shure SM7B. Now professional equipment is very expensive and for the corresponding devices are quickly called 500 € and more – too much for casual gamers or hobby streamers. Elgato wants to solve this problem by developing a dynamic microphone that has all the advantages of a condenser microphone, but at the same time bypasses many of its disadvantages. The Wave DX now enters the race with a comparatively low price tag of 119.99€. I’m very curious to see whether the concept works out – mirrorless devices have also gained the upper hand in the camera market and replaced the venerable SLR dinosaurs.
Unboxing
The Wave DX is offered either separately (119,99€) or in a bundle with interface, cable and swivel arm (299,99 – 329,99€). The bundle was available for the test, which is why I will briefly discuss the included devices in the course of this review. But first, let’s look at the protagonist of this article.
Elgato stays true to its line in packaging design and uses a sturdy cardboard box in the familiar blue.
Once you have removed the lid, a ghost laughs at you.Very exemplary: Elgato uses almost no plastic for the packaging of all the devices shown in the article. The films used to protect against dust are fully biodegradable.
Without the foil, we can admire the device in all its glory. Behind the removable logo is the same hole as on the other side, allowing the microphone to be mounted on the swivel arm (or similar) from either side.
On the other side, the massive swivel joint is screwed into that thread as standard.
The workmanship makes a high-quality and very robust impression.
On the bottom is the 3-pin XLR connector, otherwise there are no buttons or controls on the unit.
