Fan curve and operating noise (“loudness”) in context
Let’s now turn to what automatically arises when the waste heat is removed: various fan noises. The measurements in the measurement chamber are, as always, a bit tricky, because you can’t measure anything through the closed side window. Therefore, I turned off the case fans and regulated the AiO to the absolute minimum. Then they disappear grandiosely in the noise carpet of the two Radeons. Normally I do this with a silent system in the chamber, but I didn’t want to deprive you of the coil whining during gaming nor the generally very different approaches to fan control in one case. Again, you’ll find the fan diagram for each card and the respective measurement of the final value after 15 minutes of heating in the torture loop directly below. And once also coil whirring…
AMD Radeon RX 7800XT MBA 16 GB
The MBA model is more frugal than the XFX card and can therefore perform well with the smaller cooler. With around 1400 rpm, the fan operation is still acceptable.
XFX Radeon RX 7800XT MERC 16 GB
The cooler acts very confidently and cools as if there were no tomorrow. We can also see this in the low fan speeds of just over 800 rpm.
Here I have to say something about the coil whine in between. With 9 phases and almost 280 watts, this is a daring story, because there are only 9 coils in which the currents pulsate merrily. Unfortunately, you can hear that. We see the cicadas in the peaks starting at around 4 KHz and also below that at around 1.5 KHz. The card is really good and the cooler itself is quiet. But at higher FPS numbers and many load changes you can hear it.
XFX Radeon RX 7700XT QICK 12 GB
The smaller cooler of the somewhat weaker RX 7700XT from XF is also very good with it and the electronics regulate much coarser, but in the end similarly good, because the ample 800 rpm are very similar to the big sister. The slightly higher value comes from the base and tear-off noise of the propellers of the slightly flatter cooler. The chirping noise during gaming was significantly lower and barely perceptible. Luck in the coil lottery?
Sapphire Radeon RX 7700XT Pulse 12 GB
The Pulse’s two fans are as quiet as those on the XFX RX 7800XT MERC with around 1000 rpm, chapeau! Even if the card loses the direct performance comparison to the XFX RX 7700XT QICK by a narrow margin, it is quieter and above all easier to install. So you’ll have to ask your mind what you prefer.
