There are now thousands and thousands of games and the choice is almost endless for what you could and would like to play. This year, too, there are some games that have become very popular. Be it “Palworld” or “Helldivers 2”, which was released in February 2024. The game has enjoyed great popularity and has received mostly positive reviews so far. Now, however, there is a lot of criticism from users due to an announced patch, which not only annoys many but, even worse, denies direct access to the game unless you register with Sony. Players now have to be prepared to connect to a PSN account.

Helldivers 2 is an action-packed game from the development team Arrowhead Game Studios under the publisher Sony, in which you protect and liberate other planets from bugs or robots as a so-called Helldiver. The game is available on Steam and Playstation. You fight as a team of four with friends or randoms, with weapons and additional items. In its heyday, the game had over 450,000 simultaneously active players. This earned the title a great deal of trust, which has now probably been destroyed.
if you haven’t noticed yet, there was an announcement on Friday that from June 4, 2024, you will have to link your Steam account to a Playstation account in order to continue enjoying the game. This is intended to further increase security and protect players. Otherwise, you will be denied access and this has been met with a lot of criticism. This is also extremely reflected in the reviews of the game on Steam. You have to be fair and point out the small print, because the account requirement was stated from the start, but has probably not yet been implemented for technical reasons. But now it applies.

This is also clearly noticeable on the Steam page, where the latest reviews are mostly negative and the overall rating has dropped from mostly positive to balanced. The anger is great, which is hardly surprising.

Firstly, the insecure situation of the Playstation Network is mentioned. There are many data breaches and users are afraid that their data will be leaked. In addition, a game that can be played via Steam and then connected to a PSN account is a thorn in the side for many. After all, why should a non-PlayStation user create an extra account? Furthermore, it is not even possible to create a PSN account in many countries.
SONY got caught changing their own words. Accounts were OPTIONAL like the first picture, Sony comes in says its required today, and changes their wording on PSN PC games.#Helldivers2 #Steam pic.twitter.com/P4u9UUvKMq

The developers have spoken out and said that they have nothing to do with these announcements and that everything is under Sony’s control. They have already apologized to the fans and said that they are trying to find a different solution. But so far, unfortunately, the PSN account requirement is still going ahead and there has been no statement from Sony. Several countries have already been blocked for the game. Valve has also noticed this and is probably reacting in favor of the users. Apparently you can now also return the game if you have exceeded the 2h of the game. This is shown in a tweet from Helldivers 2 Media.
Refunds on Steam work!!
Here is good guy Steam accepting simple, straightforward logic.#Helldivers2 pic.twitter.com/IajnG0udjO

One can only speculate whether Sony will try to push its one launcher and game portfolio here in order to become a new player alongside Steam, Epic, Origin, Ubisoft Connect and many others. It will be interesting to see what the next steps will be and whether the PSN account requirement will really happen. All the signs are that it probably will and that will upset a large number of gamers. We are curious.
