The radi(k)all fan of the current AMD graphics cards is an acoustic plague that is better fought where it originates, namely on the card itself. After a few minutes of testing with the cheeky original, all doubts as to whether the conversion would even be possible were quickly thrown overboard. Pain makes you brave, and in the end you will lean back smiling, happy and relaxed: it works.
The conversion really only needs three things to succeed: the right parts, 5 free slots and a fair amount of patience and circumspection. On the other hand, you don’t have to be afraid if you follow our hints. A layman could at least despair of the EKL Peter manual, but that’s what we’re here for in the end. We use a load-new EKL Peter with adjustments (new brackets needed!) and 2 Noiseblocker BlackSilent Pro for our small 5-slot width express, a deal that you have to finance as a user with 90-100 euros. But it is really worthwhile from a technical point of view, so the economic aspect should be of less interest here.
Hardware not only for men – but especially
Great deeds almost always require an equally great courage, at least the same size purse and, of course, the right craft. Really big, of course, because we don’t want to spill the beans, we want to make a killing. And so the choice for the conversion of the HD 7970 GHz Edition, which turned out to be quite steep, fell on the EKL Peter 79XX Edition, which Deepcool, as a big player behind the scenes outside of Germany, also offers as Dracula.
Glacial ice in the alpenglow or Transylvanian shock freezer, Goat Peter or Count – behind both appearances there is always one and the same cooler, which in its complete expansion as a 3-slot cooling skeleton and 2-slot wind machine takes up a total of 5 slots.
That sounds like a lot, and it is a lot. We will have to prove in the test whether this cooler belongs in the early evening program or in the late show, where things can get a bit more intense. In any case, the technical specs already read quite promising:

He who sows wind will reap storm (and stay cool)
You don’t have to be that drastic, but a little variability never hurts. We would definitely install at least two fans, and in the specific case of the HD 7970 GHz Edition used, 2 impellers are easily enough. We rely on two Noiseblocker BlackSilent Pro Fan PL2 with 1,400 rpm each and a volume of 96 m³/h. These fans have an advantage: They also start up very reliably at 5 and 7 volts and are then almost inaudible even in tandem, especially at 5 volts. At 12 volts, the sound level is about on par with the good board partner cards of the Radeon HD 7970, but the combination with the EKL Peter surpasses all these cards extremely clearly in the cooling performance that can then be achieved.

You can also get this fan type with low speeds if you rather value low noise and do not want to overclock extremely high. However, we explicitly chose this model because everything is possible with it – extreme performance and almost silent operation. In terms of price, everything is still in balance, because it is also much more expensive.
