DDR5 SK Hynix 16 Gbit M Die (5H16M)
The first generation of 16 Gbit DDR5 dies from SK Hynix has been around since the launch of Z690. The clock potential is not as high as in the A-Die successor, but some timings can be adjusted tighter during overclocking. Thus, M-Die kits are by no means obsolete even in 2023 and a valid alternative in clock-limited scenarios, such as on older Z690 motherboards or on the AMD Zen4 platform.
A Trident Z5 model from G.Skill with your XMP profile of DDR5-6400 at timings 32-39-39-102 and 1.4 V serves as reference kit. As already mentioned, this same SKU is meanwhile also available with the successor A-Dies, but here it is really still an “old” M-Die kit, recognizable by the end of the SKU number on the sticks “…820M”. A-The kits would have “…820A” here accordingly. The IC or die used is irrelevant for the behavior in XMP mode; it only plays a role in manual OC.
Speaking of which, the kit can still be operated stably at 7000 Mbps with our test platform. This again speaks for the motherboard and the progress of Z790 compared to Z690. A year ago, such clock rates could only be imagined on a special OC-optimized 2-DIMM motherboard like the Z690 Apex. Today, this even works on the Hero “Gamer” SKU.
