Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Also known as SoTR is a popular CPU and RAM benchmark in the community, with its built-in benchmark feature. It even reacts to the smallest settings and tweaks in the operating system, so that there is almost a competition for the highest possible FPS number in SoTR in forums like overclock.net. But even if you don’t manipulate the settings to inflate the result, this game title can measure differences in RAM configurations, as we have already seen in our previous tests.
We also use the integrated benchmark here because, as mentioned, it works very well for this purpose and we don’t want to reinvent the wheel. we have enough “self-played” benchmarks for other titles. The version used here is 1.0 build 489.0_64.
The DDR4 configuration can also make its mark here and also establish itself in the midfield in XMP mode. In this respect, low latency should be a factor for high FPS in this title. But the other way around, bandwidth seems to be important as well, otherwise DDR4 would always be on top. So it seems that SoTR is a game title that scales with bandwidth as well as latency and cannot be abstracted so easily with synthetic benchmarks.
It’s really cool to observe how sensitive this benchmark is for RAM optimizations of any kind. The Hynix 16 Gbit A-Die kit gains around 65 FPS or 22 percentage points in 1080p with the manual overclock. The DDR4 kit with a much lower bandwidth makes a jump of 39 FPS or 13 percentage points in the same discipline and leaves all DDR5 kits behind except for the just mentioned A-Die. Thus, the lower the resolution, the more important latency seems to become. Conversely, the higher the resolution, the more important bandwidth becomes. Thus, SoTR with its engine is a very interesting RAM benchmark in itself, but also an outdated oddity with dwindling relevance.
