Fan curve and operating noise (“volume”)
Let’s now turn to what is automatically produced when the waste heat is removed: various fan noises. The measurements in the measuring chamber are, as always, a bit tricky, because you can’t measure anything through the closed side window. Therefore, I turned off the case fans and regulated the AiO to the absolute minimum. Normally, I do this with a silent system in the chamber, but I didn’t want to deprive you of the coil beeping, nor the somewhat fluctuating regulation of the RX 7900XTX.
Now let’s look at the fan curves first and we’ll understand why I couldn’t measure this to an adapted fan speed in the chamber. At least not with the RX 7900XTX, because we see an extremely jittery curve that reacts very nervously to all load changes. The manufacturer MUST improve this, because it is really annoying.
The Radeon RX 7900XT is much more inconspicuous, even if it is not really consistent:
But what does the measurement for the Radeon RX 7900XTX reveal then? I made two measurements, so once the minimum and once the maximum value under full load. You can see nicely from the frequency analysis how the fan speed changes (motor peak), so the operating noise is a from-to story that fluctuates between 43.4 dBA and 39.9 dBA.
The Radeon RX 7900XT can do better, although it is also anything but quiet. The almost 40.0 dBA are not really nice now either. In return, the cooler is smaller than in all the (much quieter) GeForce cards.
“Coil Whining” Noise
However, we still have to talk about one point and that is the annoying coil whine. I already wrote in the measurement of the load peaks that the cards perform an extremely jittery happy dance, which you can also hear. Especially since the coils used are good, but not extra class. I now have two sound recordings for you, but I have normalized them a bit. So please do not be frightened! First of all, the chirping under load (Horizon Zero Dawn UHD), as long as the fans do not rev up yet:
And now I have the whole thing again as a chamber concert for three fans and a bag of hyperventilating cicadas:
