Initial setup and test print
For the operating system I chose the popular Voron MainsailOS which has to be installed on a Raspberry Pi or similar SBC. These have been hard to get and/or expensive for a while now, so it was all the more surprising for me that the kit comes with a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB RAM. So I immediately bagged it and rather used the old Pi 3B, which I also still had.
Instead of the no-name 8GB SD-card, which is also included, I used a SanDisk Extreme 32 GB microSDHC used. Again, I will skip large parts of the process, as you can simply follow the appropriate Manual for the chosen operating system and motherboard.
In fact, I was even able to find an error in the official startup instructions, which I exemplarily reported directly to Github as an issue reported. It’s true that at one point only X and Y are swapped, but that still led to some confusion for me.
A bunch of tweaks, checks and setting adjustments later, I was able – with all fingers crossed – to flip the power switch for the first time. Fortunately, I don’t seem to have made any gross mistakes, because instead of Magic Smoke in the electronics, a working web interface greeted me. I would have to lie if I didn’t feel a big load off my mind. After about 30 hours of construction time, I could finally get started.
And as a receipt for the good start, there was another setback, because the nozzle moves directly into the center of the print bed during calibration and punches a hole through the surface. In fact, I didn’t do anything wrong, a bug in the code for Klicky was to blame. Corresponding Issue at Github is now also available, even if it doesn’t save my surface. So I scratched off the damaged smooth PEI from one side and turned it around, luckily there is a second surface in rough on the backside.
And with this I was able to make the first successful test print on my my Voron Trident! The joy was great, but the printer was not quite ready yet. Continue on the next page, we get a light!
