Summary and first conclusion
It’s starting to get dark in the Lab and pretty warm too. The day is coming to an end, the second day with the XMG Ultra 17, and so is the creative energy. I admit it, I was, also in relation to the RKL CPU in the form of the Core i9-11900K, very skeptical whether the cooling together with the laptop RTX 3080 would really manage it. Check, that works once. So from that point of view, everything is in the green, at least electrically and thermally. Deep green even, with some room to go for a hot summer. So a kind of lighthouse project for the thick folding hinge PCs.
What doesn’t work like that are the fans in performance mode. You have to be a little tougher than that if you’re still looking for your gaming salvation here. Normal work is still possible, pausing in idle as well. But that’s not what you buy a mountain range from a laptop for. Although the i9 is certainly somewhat to blame for the misery, which alone can ensure that the acoustic curfew is proclaimed after a few minutes. But to save the honor of the blue gulper, it has to be said that up to 165 watts for a graphics card is really fat. Performance yes gladly, please bag, also with green Jensen banderole, but it pinches with the time just also at the auricles.
Why the entertainment mode is called exactly the way it is can only be explained glibly in German, because in this mode (in contrast to the performance mode) you can even talk again when your laptop is hard at work in the immediate vicinity. Whether the acoustic brake then has an effect on the frame time and the variances, we will then clarify in part 2. From a purely thermal and acoustic point of view, this entertainment mode is probably the best choice.
Criticism of power consumption and utilization of all placement possibilities? Schenker, the home of the XMG products, can’t really care about all that. The material holds, the necessary value is also, the price is reasonably in proportion to the product and currently everything that has a plug goes like hotcakes anyway. There are actually two of them here. And two power supplies? Oh, it’s like one of those flap exhausts on an SUV. Two powerful witnesses of potency and in the end it’s only what comes out that counts anyway. That’s exactly what you’ll find out in the second part, where gaming and work will take place. But it will be worth it (spoiler).
As a lighthouse project, the Schenker XMG Ultra 17 has passed its baptism of fire in the lab magnificently so far and as far as the Fuego Infernale, i.e. the firestorm from the four tailpipes, is concerned: the walls are thick and the guy at the desktop is persistent and plenty tolerant. We already had it at the beginning: strength comes from… exactly that. So far, nothing to ruin your day. On the contrary.
