Choice of platform:

The most important question, in my opinion, must of course be clarified first: which platform do I choose for this project? Older Intel K-CPUs are still relevant today thanks to their great overclocking potential – especially those with hyperthreading. An overclocked i7 3770K or 4770K can be fitted with four cores or eight threads still keep up surprisingly well today and also insider tips like the (unfortunately not overclockable) Xeon 1231v3 appear again and again on the used market. But these platforms have several very serious drawbacks:

• They are old and the boards are slowly prone to failures after many years of use
• Despite the old age, the parts still tend to be relatively expensive
• These are "dead" platforms – if performance is no longer sufficient, there is no upgrade option

If you find a good offer – for example, you can take over the discarded hardware from an acquaintance at a reasonable price – you can undoubtedly have a lot of fun with an older Intel i7 system. For this project, however, AMD's more modern AM4 platform is simply better suited as it offers significant benefits:

• Modern, extensive equipment already in the middle class
• Overclocking possible on all relevant chipsets (B 350/450/550, X 370/470/570)
• Cheap CPUs new and used available
• Future-proof as multi-CPU generations and up to 16 cores/32 threads compatible

I would like to put these advantages through the pace in the coming period and maybe in the foreseeable future I can even make a comparison of how the chosen system will be able to deal with an older Intel system in the long term (e.g. with a 4770K).
