HDR performance
I’m sorry, but I can’t present you a real HDR monitor again. The LG 27GN950 only has edge-lit dimming with 8 zones. Thus, only half of what the PG279QM brings along. In addition, the monitor – like all IPS panels without FALD – lacks native contrast. I’m also tired of making the next long announcement about HDR to monitor manufacturers now. Short and sweet: The LG 27GN950 manages up to 750 nits peak brightness in HDR mode and achieves a contrast of about 9000:1 (in the best case). This is not enough, because at least 50,000:1 would be needed here. Those who expect HDR gaming from the LG 27GN950 will be disappointed.
Gray Scale and Color Accuracy (HDR on, OSD Local Dimming auto, variable Backlight faster)
Measurement Report 3.8.9.3 – 27GN950 @ 0, 0, 3840×2160 – 2022-09-22 16-37 HDR
Please take a look at the rest in the protocol itself. Nothing can be calibrated in HDR mode or adjusted in the OSD. Yes, the brightness and sharpness… WoW, that totally pulls it off. Thus, in the end, you have to live with what falls over your HDR-hungry eyes on the display.
Subjective overall impression
I’ve been using it since November 2021 and after almost 1,500 hours of use – I can tell you: the LG 27GN950 is still a real gaming beast. The UHD resolution and 144 Hz are future-proof because this is just starting to get interesting with the new GPUs from NVIDIA and AMD. The RGB lighting behind the panel is the only one that is really perceived as such. It brings the necessary light into the gaming room without any light interfering with the panel or sitting completely in a darkened room. For me, this is important, but is up to each person.
What I also find very good are the rear-facing ports. This may sound strange now, but it is more practical than the standard ports at the bottom. Those who, like me, often have to reconnect something, probably know what I mean. I get a crisis every time I have to plug something in downstairs. You see nothing, everything must slip etc. Annoying! When the white point is set, the colors usually fit as well and then especially Stroy games like Tomb Raider or LS 22 are really fun. You are initially blown away by the image quality. UHD is razor sharp on 27 inches. If you have the right GPU power, you can even play CoD MW multiplayer with 144 FPS in UHD. The RX 6900 XT or the RTX 3080 Ti manage that.
The good thing about the LG 27GN950 is that you can use it for work as long as you are in the sRGB or P3 color space. However, the monitor is primarily a gaming tool. Shall we lock up? We’re locking up. Last page please….
