Today there is my second test monitor, which I use for my articles concerning DLSS/FSR etc.. UHD gaming is becoming more and more popular and thus you also need a monitor that can reproduce this resolution natively. Thankfully, LG supported me here and provided me with the LG UltraGear 27GN950. The LG 27GN950 dates back to 2020 and had an MSRP of 899 Euros. In the meantime, there is already a successor, to which I will refer here and there. Today’s corpus delicti, however, is the LG 27GN950. It should be on the list when you think about buying a UHD gaming monitor.
The monitor is from LG Electronics and the panel is from LG Display. This is a nano IPS panel with a max resolution of 3840 x 2160p and RGB subpixel layout. LG lowered the RRP to 599 Euros, which sounds much better. Now the monitor just has to prove its gaming suitability. Hoping that the LG 27GN950 can also be used for working in the sRGB and P3 color space. But one after the other… My test sample was passed on to me with already more than 1,500 operating hours on the panel – so to speak. God knows who was allowed to run riot on it.
But that doesn’t matter, because I can show you the performance of this monitor in the long run. You can compare this with other tests from 2020/2021, it will be interesting. The most important features are listed in the usual overview: More can be found on LG’s website (click here)
So, let’s collect briefly. The display is supposed to have a real 10-bit color depth? I’m not so sure about that and say that the display uses 8 bits + FRC. It doesn’t matter if it’s 10 bit or 8 bit + FRC, it doesn’t make a difference. If you want to use the 144 Hz in UHD, you have to have a GPU that supports DP 1.4 with DSC. Otherwise, the 144 Hz or 160 Hz won’t work. Yes, you read correctly: The LG 27GN950 can also run at 160 Hz with overclocking enabled. But only from firmware greater than v3.03, 5.57. I will return to this topic at the very end. Grrrr…
Since I don’t have a decryption of the Da Vinci code for the LG 27GN950, we’ll leave that out today. Likewise, I don’t have a PDF from the manufacturer to show you more specifications. Therefore, today only a picture from the LG homepage:
On paper, the monitor does have a lot to offer. Then let’s see what will come true in the end. We start with the external impression, cables and fuss. One page further please…
