Grayscale, color fidelity and gamut to factory settings
The LG 27GN950 runs directly in wide gamut. Which means that any content – be it YouTube, websites, games, etc. (sRGB/Rec. 709) – is displayed oversaturated. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s an important issue. Because both ASUS (PG279QM) and MSI (MEG381CQR+) have done it before, sRGB unlocked on factory settings. The color space coverage is typical for LG and focuses on sRGB and DCI-P3. We already know… For AdobeRGB, the panel of the 27GN950 is also – for my taste – too weak on pixels.
Gray Scale Default
The rest can be found in the measurement report:
Measurement Report 3.8.9.3 – 27GN950 @ 0, 0, 3840×2160 – 2022-09-16 22-29
The biggest weakness is the white point. Completely out of the cap… The rest looks good. The contrast of 1000:1 is also where LG advertises it.
ColorChecker Default
The LG 27GN950 comes flying around the panel with a pretty solid Average delta E 2000 = 2.39), total grit isn’t it. Worse is always possible. If you don’t attach much importance to the color accuracy in detail, you won’t care in the end. The largest deviation here is also the white point.

Before we unpack the calibration tool again, let’s set the D65 and 200 nits. Maybe the values will look better then.
D65 @ 200 Nits OSD Settings
Gray Scale @ D65 200 Nits
And with the D65 at 200 nits, it looks like this:
Measurement Report 3.8.9.3 – 27GN950 @ 0, 0, 3840×2160 – 2022-09-16 22-57
Much better already. Moving on…
ColorChecker @ D65 200 Nits
With corrected white point, it doesn’t get any better in the end. But a little worse…
Measurement Report 3.8.9.3 – 27GN950 @ 0, 0, 3840×2160 – 2022-09-16 22-51
Only a calibration can help. I’ll get to that in a minute. Before you do this, check the min. and max. brightness.
Display brightness
The LG 27GN950 achieves a completely sufficient maximum brightness. That’s almost too much for SDR, at least for my sensibilities.
As far as the minimum brightness is concerned, the LG 27GN950 has to admit defeat to the other – so far tested – gaming monitors.
The, let’s call it factory performance, in terms of brightness and general color performance is solid – for a gaming monitor this is still bearable. The white point is completely off, but can be fixed quite easily. Unfortunately, this is not enough for a really good color accuracy. A calibration will certainly help. Next page.
