Processing and mobility
The monitor comes, how could it be otherwise, in a plastic dress. The workmanship is on a very high level. The narrow edges around the display are particularly noticeable here – or rather less so. I personally like that, but in the end it’s not the essence of a monitor. As we all know, there’s no accounting for design. The LG 27GN950 can be tilted, adjusted in height and rotated in portrait mode. Unfortunately, it cannot be swiveled. For this, it can be mounted on the wall or an arm via Vesa 100 x 100.
I almost forgot. Portrait format – here we go.
For the readers who, for example, live under the roof and want / need to take into account their roof slope:
The RGB lighting on the back can get pretty darn bright. This is just awesome… You know, I am the RGB nerd. Don’t worry, it can also be turned off. Regarding cable management, you can use the small clamp on the stand. Better than nothing.
Connectors and cables
Cables are all included as usual. You get 1x DisplayPort, 1x HDMI, USB type B to A and of course the external power supply. An external power supply, again? Yes, that may please one person and not another. That’s where everyone will be flexible enough to tuck it away so it’s not noticeable.
If you connect your computer or console via HDMI, you can only use UHD at 60 Hz. Or, you can take the LG 27GP950 (the successor), which has HDMI 2.1, but also has its drawbacks. Let me come back to that.
OSD and overlays
The OSD is typical for LG, which I already knew from my LG 27GL850. Basically nothing has changed, everything is done via the small joystick. There are the usual gaming tools: crosshairs, black brightener, etc. I like the color selection for the crosshairs. Green is one of the best perceived by the human eye. Furthermore, various game modes, white point control and much more. See:
Software
If you don’t feel like clicking around in the OSD, you can also download LG’s OSC (OnScreen Control) software. This allows you to control the OSD using the software, which I find a good alternative. Is much clearer. You can also control the RGB lighting via dedicated software. I don’t understand why an extra software has been created for this purpose, because it could have been integrated into the OSC software. Well.
Other
This panel is also matte and is thus supposed to reduce mirroring and reflections. It does that quite well. Backlight strobing is not available: Strobing is incompatible with LG’s Nano IPS panels because they drift fully into the red.
The RGB lighting can be controlled via the small wheel next to the stick and can also be turned off by pressing the wheel. The RGB software can be used to synchronize the lighting with music or video. Similar to the Philips Ambient-Light. So, let’s move on…
