Summary and conclusion
The Doogee S89 Pro is a real outdoor smartphone with decent storage, an almost monstrous battery, and the chance to make calls for what feels like ages. However, the somewhat outdated processor still does its job quite well and the graphics performance is at least just sufficient for lighter games. In return, the endurance is amazing and the casing’s durability delivers exactly what the manufacturer promises. In direct comparison with the much more expensive Hotwav Cyber 7, the Doogee S89 Pro is partly much slower, but it also lasts almost three times as long.
The display is crisp and you can also live quite well with this IPS panel. It is still bright enough during the day and does a decent job. The mono speaker is relatively loud, rattles a bit and is quite good especially for conversations. However, music is better enjoyed via an external Bluetooth device or wired headphones, as there is even a 3.5 mm jack on the top. Then the cable serves as an FM radio and you can then even without a cell phone tower nearby and network coverage at least still enjoy location, FM radio and flashlight. With the night vision camera, you can find your way around in the dark if necessary, which gives the Doogee S89 Pro a nice unique selling point compared to the Cyber 7 from Hotwav (and many other rugged phones).
The camera is okay, but not very good and still better than that of the Cyber 7 and many other products in this price range. However, the much too high resolution would have been better downsampled internally, also to save storage space and traffic. Because you will rarely really need this pixel invasion. The ultra-wide-angle works quite nicely and the portrait camera on the front is solidly average. Of course, the kids especially liked the colorful LEDs on the back, whose signals and colors can be set individually. It’s fancy enough to make kids’ eyes really sparkle. That’s just by the way.
Speaking of children: The use as a still affordable and at the same time rock-solid and indestructible entry-level phone is really worth considering. Even if there are certainly suitable covers or even cases for the discarded parent phones – usually these phones are already dangerously close to battery death. And if you send your child on a trip with a phone, e.g. to a distant school, then communication in an emergency should not fail due to a worn-out battery. However, this is exactly where the power bank phone is currently unbeatable. The only danger is that the device lasts so long that you often forget where you actually put the charger days ago.
Rugged phones under 200 Euros are almost always not worth the money you have to put down, at 400 Euros the pain threshold sets in and the understanding goes out. The Doogee S89 Pro is cleverly positioned in between and should cost around 300 Euros or just under. However, it is rather questionable whether Doogee will do us this favor right after the launch. However, I would definitely go along with it up to about 320 Euros, even if the processor is no longer dewy. The part is always sufficient for the intended purpose. If I wasn’t convinced by this part, I wouldn’t have written this test, because the other test objects are piled up here by now. But so shortly before the start of the school year and the rearrangement of all the cell phone contracts, it just had to be done.
