Unboxing
You get the smartphone in a sealed cardboard box, pre-assembled with another protective cover, the 65-watt power adapter including USB-C cable, a handy helper for opening recessed slots on the phone (TF/SIM, USB, 3.5 mm phone jack) or removing protective foils. You should really pick this one up because it works really well. The enclosed paperwork, however, is then rather secondary. That’s all there is and you have to take care of the SIM card yourself.
Dimensions, weight, look and feel
With the 17.2 cm length, 8.6 cm width and 1.94 cm height, the 398 gram phone (without further casing) is a real brick. It even surpasses the Hotwav Cyber 7, especially in height (thickness) and weight (battery!). The 6.3-inch display with the installed IPS panel is relatively large, but is once again bordered by wide edges and bears a drop-shaped notch for the front camera. The resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels, which is not a matter of course for outdoor smartphones, offers a pleasant 409 pixels per inch (ppi) for the Doogee S89 Pro
Overall, the case naturally looks quite massive, but anything but clunky. It is, after all, a rugged phone for the tougher lifestyles and not a hot-showering salon phone. You have to accept that. However, TFT also means that the fingerprint sensor had to be positioned separately and not behind the display. As usual, the whole thing has been integrated into the on/off button on the right, above which you still find the rocker button for the volume.
On the left, opposite side, you can still see a freely definable button and the TF/SIM slot. but more on that in a moment. The 3.5 mm headphone jack is still located behind a rubber lip on the upper side. If a handset is connected, it also functions as an antenna for the integrated FM radio.
The USB-C port is located in a recess at the bottom behind a rubber lip that also closes tightly. Of course, this is enough to protect the Doogee from splashes, but I wouldn’t want to throw it into a bucket. The manufacturer at least certifies protection against splash water, fumes and dust with IP68/IP69K or MIL-STD-810H, which should be sufficient. I tested that in turn, of course.
The expansion cards are generous. You can use a real dual-SIM system AND a small SD card as storage medium, so you can insert three cards in the maximum case. Here, too, the red sealing rubber indicates that intruders must please stay outside.
