AMD Threadripper 2970WX and 2920X – the smaller offshoots of the big crunchers

Far Cry 5

Intel's Core i9-9900K is the fastest in Far Cry 5. But Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX is also impressive after a certain overclocking. Really, but there are no big differences between most of our test objects. While Far Cry 5 is one of the most repeatable metrics in our suite with a deviation of less than 0.5 FPS between runs, we found some curiosities after enabling dynamic local mode.

For example, the results changed between 60 and 65 FPS. This repeatable phenomenon remained unchanged after several repetitions. We also recorded significantly lower 99 percentile frame rates and uneven gameplay when enabled. AMD has informed us that dynamic local mode still needs to be optimized for a wider range of applications and games, so our finding is likely to be corrected in the future. At the moment, however, game mode is the first choice, as the test results show.

Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V favors Intel's architecture and, more generally, a multicore design with high clock speeds. An overclocked Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX passes the Core i9-7900X, while the 2990WX doesn't benefit quite as much from the OC. Once again, game mode proves to be the obvious choice for games (despite a bigger win from the dynamic local mode this time, you should prefer the Creator Mode).

Hitman

Hitman scales well with high core numbers and clock rates, so it's not surprising to find the Core i9-7960X in the first place. The Ryzen 7 2700X also proves that it has a very good price/performance ratio.
