Real achievable clock rates and overclocking
While the GPU clock of the Super card is up to 2910 MHz when cold, it levels off a few boost steps lower at 290 to 2805 MHz more or less permanently once it has warmed up completely. You can definitely leave that alone. With manual OC, it was then stable up to 2970 MHz under long full load. The performance gains were then around 3% compared to the FE, even if it’s not enough for the RTX 4070 Ti Non-Super.
GPU temperatures in the case
The differences are not as great as feared if you use a proper case. If you close the panel, the GPU temperature (edge) rises by around 2 Kelvin, while the GDC hotspot rises by up to 3 Kelvin. Nevertheless, the values of 68 °C (Edge) and 77 °C (Hotspot) are absolutely nothing to worry about. With maximum OC, the values rise to a good 70 °C or 80 °C (hotspot), which is just about right.
Infrared measurements (heat flow analysis)
Let’s start with the gaming loop and we can see that the voltage converters get quite warm, but not yet really hot.
The cooling is still in control at this point and we end up in the hotspot at around 70°C without a backplate. Backplate cooling via a suitably placed pad could provide a good remedy here. A self-experiment with a pad below the voltage converter row and with the foil cut out shows almost 5 degrees lower temperatures at the inserted K resistor below the hotspot.
