Today follows the last part of this little hobby project, but the end comes with a bang (metaphorically): Ryzen 7, 16GB RAM and a proud 32TB of storage. I had already teased the slightly extended version of the normal NAS, now it can finally show what it can do!
The title already gave it away, for this system, which can also be used as a server, we switch from OpenMediaVault to TrueNAS CORE. If you want to take another look at the last two parts, which are more about setting up OMV, you can do so here

But before we get to the installation and setup, why TrueNAS at all?
I am basically satisfied with OpenMediaVault and have been using it for several years as the operating system for my personal backup solution. Also works great! However, if you want to go a bit more in the direction of server homelab, you will quickly reach the limits of this NAS-oriented operating system. There are ways via third-party plugins and extensions for Docker, but that’s strapping a bit much on top of it.
And why go to the trouble of upgrading something when there is also a direct solution to this problem? Because TrueNAS CORE, formerly FreeNAS, offers native support for virtual machines, server management (1 node) and can even the modern storage architecture ZFS / RAIDZ. But one “downside” of all these features is that the system requirements are of course much higher than with OpenMediaVault. But I think that is a self-solving problem, who actually needs TrueNAS has the appropriate performance for the operation anyway.
And exactly that is put this little project to the side, what exactly I have built here you will learn on the next page!
