Shadow of the Tomb Raider with the RTX 3080 Ti
Even though the game is already a few years old, it is still used for comparisons. So it was also one of the first games with ray tracing and DLSS. Intel has also grabbed the classic and implemented its upscaling technology XeSS. Since Intel, did that right now, a look back at Lara’s adventures – is all the more worthwhile. We are now killing two birds with one stone. The new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 gets to show off its raw performance and Intel’s XeSS enters the DLSS comparison as another FPS accelerator. It’s excellent that Intel is allowed to present itself here today. Here we go…
Benchmark and settings
The settings I chose can be found here and except for the DLSS and XeSS levels, nothing was changed.
Here is the benchmark:
Should be clear, so we can look at the data collected.
FPS comparison native vs. DLSS vs. XeSS with the RTX 3080 Ti
All beginnings are difficult, which is unfortunately also the case for Intel’s XeSS. Take a close look: DLSS Balanced is enough to completely expose Intel. Unfortunately, I can’t call it anything else regarding the performance increase on the part of XeSS. AMD was usually better than DLSS 2.0/2.3 with FSR 1.0, at least in this discipline. But in the end, the eye is also decisive. And in a pinch – the sausage tastes good even without bread. So if DLSS is not available, you can also take the extra FPS generated by Intel for free. However, DLSS is clearly the winner – in terms of FPS gain.
The 5 FPS that XeSS Performance gets out compared to DLSS Balanced, we can press that into the skat. Nobody notices anyway! DLSS comes out of the back like a steam hammer, the only question remains: What graphically falls by the wayside for this performance explosion. Still to come… Now let’s look at the details.
This all looks quite okay, hopefully it will be better with the RTX 4090 and we’ll have a look at it now.
FPS comparison native vs. DLSS vs. XeSS with the RTX 4090
Well, look here… The RTX 4090 goes off like a shot deer on nitrous oxide. Boy howdy… If you can do without DXR, you will get well over 100 FPS natively and can enjoy your UHD 144 Hz monitor.
The frame times are significantly better than with the RTX 3080 Ti. And how does that compare directly?
FPS comparison RTX 3080 Ti vs. RTX 4090 with DLSS
What did NVIDIA say: double the performance? True, at least in terms of the 3080 Ti. Fact is, the RTX 4090 is faster than the RTX 3080 Ti by a factor of 2.06. Now let’s be honest: The RTX 4090 with DLSS quality disassembles the RTX 3080 Ti into its individual parts. And it should be clear that the image quality in this mode is usually better than native. So far, I don’t see NVIDIA going completely overboard with marketing.
So, now we know the performance with DLSS, without DLSS, XeSS and of course the differences between the two test objects. The graphic comparison between DLSS and XeSS is still missing. Next page.
