Material analysis in detail: MSI RTX 4080 Super Expert 16GB
Let’s start with the vapor chamber, which also functions as the GPU heatsink. This is made of pure electrolytic copper and is thinly nickel-plated. You can see that the surface is not completely homogeneous. But that doesn’t really matter, because there are also…
… the heat-conducting paste as a kind of phase-change pad. A single burn-in of the material, which consists mainly of aluminum oxide and zinc oxide, is enough to ensure that everything is firmly in place. At around 85:15, the ratio is really useful, whereas 70:30 is more normal.
The memory uses copper plates as heatsinks, which are soldered directly onto the chamber and later nickel-plated in one piece. This also applies to the two thicker heatsinks for the MOSFETs.
Now we come to the gray pads for the memory, where a rather soft compound is used. With an aluminum and zinc oxide mixture, these silicone pads are rather middle class.
The coils are connected with a pure corundum pad, which is also quite good.
For the voltage transformers, on the other hand, it is an aluminum-zinc pad that feels like plasticine.
The heat pipes are made of nickel-plated copper and hide no secrets. Just the usual.
The entire body, including the backplate, consists of a so-called wrought alloy, which delivers excellent results at both low and high temperatures. The addition of silicon increases strength at the expense of overall ductility. The addition of copper reduces thermal expansion while increasing mechanical strength, although there is a susceptibility to pitting corrosion. In addition to the high tensile strength of all aluminum alloys in the 4000 series, the reduced thermal expansion is the decisive factor.
The clamping cross of the GPU is also interesting in terms of color under the microscope. It is spring steel with a galvanized copper layer, on top of which there is a nickel layer, which in turn has a tin layer. Well…
That concludes the analysis part and we can finally move on to the benchmarks.
