Efficiency evaluation
Now let’s move on to the efficiency evaluation, as the amount of watts needed to achieve a certain gaming performance in terms of FPS as a metric in watts per FPS. This is the opposite of what the manufacturers like to use, but I think it is much easier to use the larger numbers before the decimal point. And because I don’t want to force you to use a calculator, the calculation is included as a bar-graph service for free. We can see that the MSI RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X is almost as efficient in QHD as NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4090 FE.
And what happens now in Ultra HD? The MSI RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X has to work much harder and is less limited by the CPU. This reduces the efficiency somewhat, but the gap is not huge. However, the higher power limit has a slightly negative effect. Okay, that’s complaining at a very, very high level.
Various processes can also be used to make Ultra HD more playable, but how does this affect efficiency? Since especially the new Tensor Cores have to do more work, the MSI RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X is slightly behind the Founders Edition in terms of efficiency. But that is not really much and can be tolerated very well in view of the performance and low operating noise.
Summary and conclusion
Whether you really need the 26 voltage converters on the 13 phases for the GPU remains to be seen. But it’s a nice nice-to-have that eases the pain of the purchase price a tiny bit. Because you get an excellently designed and equipped PCB with everything the market has to offer in the top drawer. Even the fans on the adequately sized AiO compact water cooling are from MSI’s current fan series and are virtually imperceptible. Even the single hybrid fan on the card is not quieter, on the contrary. The 47 cm of tubing is quite generous, even though an installation height of at least 20 cm will probably cause problems for many users if no riser cable including a vertical mount for the card is available.
Visually, the card fits into the SUPRIM design language and I see the lack of RGB fans on the radiator as more of a plus. The overall performance is free of criticism and the MSI RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X is certainly one of the fastest cards currently (not) available on the market. That’s why I can’t give a buying tip here, because the prices are downright absurd, if the card is ever available anywhere. That’s why we have the Editor’s Choice, because MSI has actually done everything right with the GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X.
The graphics card was provided by MSI for this test. The only condition was compliance with the blocking period; there was no influence or remuneration.
