The HIFIMAN HE400se (se stands for stealth edition) is characterized by its planar magnetic technology, which results in a very clear and detailed sound image. This technology, usually found in much more expensive headphones, enables a surprisingly even and very precise sound transmission. In addition, the HE400se offers an open design that contributes to a very natural soundstage, with certain acoustic disadvantages for the environment.
Despite these high-quality features, these headphones are available at a comparatively extremely low price of less than 100 euros in some cases, making them an attractive proposition for audiophiles looking for high sound quality at an affordable price and providing me with an ideal template for a bargain check. Planar headphones in this price range? Yes, it’s possible and it works amazingly well and almost without any major compromises.
What distinguishes magnetostats from conventional headphones?
Planar magnetic headphones use a thin membrane embedded between a magnetic array and printed with conductive material. When current flows through the material, it interacts with the magnetic field, causing the entire diaphragm to vibrate evenly and produce sound. In contrast, dynamic headphones use a coil that is attached to a diaphragm and moves in a magnetic field.
The current through the coil creates a force that moves the coil and diaphragm to produce sound. Planar magnetic headphones often offer less distortion and a more detailed sound due to the even excitation of the diaphragm, but are often larger and heavier due to the magnetic structures required. And they also require a sufficiently powerful headphone amplifier, which effectively rules out onboard solutions. A pity, but you can’t have everything at the same time.
Scope of delivery
You receive the headphone, an almost 1.5 meter long stereo cable with a Y-whip for connection to the shells on both sides and with an angled 3.5 stereo jack plug for connection to analog outputs. The angle is nonsensical because no smartphone is likely to be able to deliver the necessary levels. In addition, such a useless angle prevents the use of extension cables. Yes, it would work, but it looks really silly.
Nobody will understand what HIFIMAN was thinking here. In addition to the rubber-sheathed cable, there is at least an adapter to 6.3 mm stereo, which makes the bracket on the desktop or good amplifiers seem even more pointless. Here I recommend a suitable cable from the accessories with a suitable length and neutral, ultra-soft sheathing.
Technical data
Now you can certainly write yourself silly about the technical data, but I’ll conveniently let the manual from the website speak for itself. There are many more things described there that go beyond the scope of a review like this, marketing included. In a nutshell, it reads like this:
Frequency Response: | 20 Hz – 20 kHz |
Impedance: | 32 Ω |
Sensitivity: | 91 dB |
Weight: | 385 g |
