Today I’m going to introduce you to an equalizer software that no PC should be without if you seriously want to enjoy music on your PC or play games in style. Forget all the sliders on Realtek or Nahimic drivers or the software that often comes with gaming headsets. With 5 to 7 controls, fixed frequency settings and opaque filters of the simple graphic equalizers, you won’t win a flower pot. The “Equalizer APO”, a parametric equalizer software for Windows 10 and Windows 11, is better.
The “Peace Equalizer” based on this is a graphical extension for this software. This combination allows users to fine-tune freely selectable bass, mid or treble frequencies of the sound from headphones or loudspeakers to eliminate unwanted peaks or weakening frequency ranges and to emphasize or adjust the important frequencies for an immersive sound experience.
Another outstanding feature of Peace is the integration of AutoEQ, a collection of equalizer profiles for different headphone models that enables personalized sound adjustment. Users can choose from a variety of profiles and apply them as they wish or download and integrate them themselves from various sources. In the future, I will probably also make suggestions for profiles in the most important tests, because it’s the obvious thing to do. Peace also supports importing profiles from text files (and vice versa), which further increases the customization options.
Download and installation
The installation of Peace Equalizer and Equalizer APO requires a few steps and prerequisites. Peace Equalizer and Equalizer APO are designed for current Windows operating systems and are (as of today) compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is necessary to have administrator rights on the computer for the installation, as changes are made to the audio system. In addition, functioning audio hardware (sound card, integrated audio chipsets, etc.) is required, which is usually the case. An Internet connection is of course required to download the installation files and any necessary updates, but we know that.
First, Equalizer APO, the basic software for Peace, must be downloaded and installed. During the intuitive installation process, you will be asked to select an audio device for which you want to configure Equalizer APO. During the installation of Equalizer APO, the option “Install as SFX/EFX” should be selected. This is the default option for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The download button below will take you to SourceForge in a new window/tab, where you will find the latest version of this freeware:
after installing Equalizer APO, you will usually need to restart your computer. This step is necessary because Peace Equalizer tests the correct installation of EQ APO before setup and only then can the setup be continued. Once the computer has been restarted, Peace Equalizer can be downloaded and installed.
After installing Peace, you should check the settings and adjust them to your needs (and level of knowledge). This includes access to the Equalizer APO configurator via the “Debugging and Testing” tab in Peace, which should be particularly useful in case of problems after Windows updates. Within the Peace user interface, AutoEQ can also be used to load and apply specific equalizer profiles for different headphone models. But I’ll come to that in a moment.
These initial steps and requirements are of course only a basic guide and it is important to pay attention to any specific instructions or options during the installation process to ensure correct setup and function. This is because versions can change and some menus or queries may look different. Regardless of this, I am also happy to provide Peter’s videos:
