Material analysis
If you remove the ear pads, you can see the magnetostat. The coils of magnetostats, also known as planar magnetic transducers, are manufactured in a unique way. Instead of a traditional wire coil, as used in dynamic headphones, the “coil” of a magnetostat consists of a thin, conductive material that is applied directly to the diaphragm of the headphones. This material can be, for example, a thin film of copper or aluminum (as in this case). The process involves applying or etching this conductive material in a precise pattern directly onto the diaphragm. This pattern forms the coil and is crucial for sound reproduction.
When an electrical signal flows through this “coil”, it interacts with the fixed magnets surrounding the diaphragm, creating a force that moves the diaphragm and generates sound waves. The magnets used in the HIFIMAN HE400se, which are made of iron oxide and strontium, are so-called ferrite magnets or ceramic magnets. Ferrite magnets are permanent magnets made from a combination of iron oxide (Fe2O3) and strontium carbonate (SrCO3) or sometimes barium carbonate (BaCO3). These materials are mixed and then pressed or sintered into molds to obtain the desired magnet shape. Ferrite magnets are widely used in many applications due to their good magnetic properties, resistance to demagnetization and low price.
We can also indirectly see the diaphragm through the grid (picture above) of the back cover, but I have not lasered it for reasons of preservation. Everything is covered and protected from dust by a carbon fiber textile.
However, the material of the metal grille is also quite interesting, as we see pure iron. The carbon is only in the black powder coating.
The fork and bracket of the headphone suspension are made of a special aluminum-magnesium alloy, right down to the swivel mechanism. This material is very strong, light and easier to work with than pure aluminum.
The rest of the shells are made of impact-resistant, shiny silver plastic, which at first glance looks like the light metal of the forks. The mix of materials gives no cause for criticism, on the contrary, it is really high quality.
