SLI versus CrossfireX with 2 GPUs
We want to make a fair comparison to SLI at this point, since we can only take this detailed look at the mid-range chips for CrossfireX due to the available test cards, since no similar Nvidia solution is available on the market. We have therefore drawn a direct comparison to an SLI with 2 Geforce GTX 560s, which are nominally as fast as a single Radeon HD 6870. What you can see at first glance: The Nvidia cards scale a bit lower on average in SLI, but the stutters are not as extreme as here in the Crossfire test. However, visible micro-stutters are also present in SLI:
The converted fps (y-axis) for each of the 50 individual frames is shown. What is noticeable: As a single card, the GTX 560 (without Ti) is subject to greater fluctuations than the HD 6870 at roughly identical frame rates. The SLI scales worse and the average frame rate of the SLI is significantly lower than that of the CrossfireX pair. However, this suffers from visible micro-stutters, while the “slower” SLI even seems faster purely subjectively because these stutters are largely absent. Of course, we also ran many other benchmarks and have to fairly add that the rounder frame rates only speak for the SLI as long as the drivers were not trimmed to frame rates, like for certain synthetic benchmarks or for games often used as benchmarks.
Interim summary
Optical advantage for the single cards from Nvidia, which are priced a tad higher. SLI often scales a bit lower than CrossfireX, but then (and only then) offers the better frame rates.
