CrossfireX with the Radeon HD 6870 X2
Let’s get back to the Powercolor Radeon HD 6870 X2. Here, two 6870 chips are placed on a PCB and connected to each other as a single solution via a Lucid chip. Let’s look at the progression of both curves. It is easy to see that the average frame rate of the X2 is almost twice the performance of the single card. But what we also see is the very “non-round” course:
The converted fps (y-axis) for each of the total of 50 single frames are shown. Whilepeak values far beyond 200% total performance occur in parts, the frame rates collapse extremely in other places and almost only reach the level of the single card. As viewers, we then perceive these spots as a short but visible jolt.
CrossfireX with 2 x Radeon HD 6870
Let’s now compare Powercolor’s solution with two normal single cards. Here, about 280 Euros for the two single cards and about 340 Euros for the X2 are opposed to each other. The achievable average frame rate is about the same, but the solution without Lucid chip brings slightly lower drops to the graphics card as a visible result:
The converted fps (y-axis) for each of the 50 individual frames is shown. Despite the slight advantages, this high frame rate is actually pure window dressing, because constant performance unfortunately looks different.
Interim summary
Very slight optical advantage for the single cards, which are also 60 euros cheaper. Thus, the Powercolor HD 6870 X2 only makes sense here when there is no suitable board for two single cards. The power consumption of both variants is comparable and the Lucid chip does not bring any advantage.
