With the SGK50 S3, SHARKOON is expanding its portfolio with another compact keyboard that is not only fully hotswappable, but also compatible with the open-source QMK/VIA software. Read on to find out whether the keyboard, which is available in several versions, is convincing.
It’s no longer a secret that I have my problems with keyboards that deviate from the standard German layout. In the sometimes hectic everyday office life, there are often enough situations where every keystroke has to be right and especially when you have customers on site, it looks more than unfortunate if you have to test or search for any key combinations to execute an essential function. However, the SGK50 S3 is a 75% keyboard – in principle, only the numeric keypad and the print/roll/pause keys are missing, which is rarely needed, especially when gaming. All other functions/keys are available or can be accessed directly. Of course, the adapted layout still requires a certain amount of getting used to and if you juggle a lot with numbers, then any form of compact keyboard is useless anyway. So as not to start another discussion, I’ll mention up front in this article that my personal preference will have no influence on the test result.
Variants
The SGK50 S3 comes in several versions, which I would like to briefly introduce first.
SGK50 S3 Black/White
The “standard” version with translucent ABS keycaps comes in black or white and is available for €79.90. This model is available pre-configured with Gateron switches in red (linear), yellow (linear with higher resistance) and brown (tactile without audible click).
SGK50 S3 PBT
The PBT version of the S3 has an even more premium feel. The durable, but unfortunately not translucent keycaps cost €10 extra and are only available in white. There is also no choice of switches – the PBT version is always equipped with the Gateron G Pro 3.0 Yellow, which we liked quite a bit when we tested the Nerdytec Cykey .
SGK50 S3 Barebone
If you want to assemble your S3 completely yourself, you can also purchase the barebone model in black or white. Complete without switches and keycaps, the S3 then costs €59.90.
