Power consumption in factory state as summary
The 27.5 watts at idle have improved, but are still quite high, fluctuating between 12 watts and up to 36 watts. With a second monitor, this quickly becomes 50 watts and more (peaks over 70 watts). The driver still urgently needs to be improved here, especially since the PCIe does not always clock down properly either, not even on a current Intel system. By the way, we can see very nicely that almost the full TBP is exhausted starting from WQHD and even the torture loop barely increases. AMD’s new implementation of telemetry for the entire card has a very limiting effect here. I had already discussed this in several articles and AMD also communicated it this way. The matching link to the article is available again at the bottom of this page.
For comparison, I also have the values of the reference card for you, which is a bit more frugal (but also a bit slower):
Load distribution between PCIe slot and the PCIe sockets
The distribution of the power supply shows that the card still has reserves in terms of TBP and the performance of the rails. While the two 8-pin ports are not fully utilized either, the motherboard slot is also quite good with up to 3.3 amps. So there would still be room for an OC, but do they even want it?
All in all, AMD has almost fully utilized the load distribution here, which is actually a bit irritating. While NVIDIA has almost completely stopped supplying via the PEG, AMD uses this rail quite excessively. Did they simply want to save the third 8-pin, which the board partners have implemented, for PR reasons? In this context, the new partial voltage VDDCR_USR also raises some questions. However, no tangible information on this can be found in the board partners’ documents either. The up to 20 watts that AMD only provides there via the RX 7900XTX’s two phases is slightly surprising, since a single voltage regulator would probably have been more than sufficient for that.
