Office and gaming in one PC? We build a gaming-ready office computer and marvel at Ryzen and Radeon | PC-Praxis

Summary and conclusion

The PC is – at the current time – unfortunately much too expensive, but if you look past the price, then you get a very quiet, cool and above all fast computer. This PC will be able to display the vast majority of games in WQHD, at very high to ultra settings, at well over 100 FPS. The selected components from be quiet! have fully convinced me personally. Since I use a comparable 240 mm AIO from a market competitor in my PC, I can say that the PL 240 is state of the art in terms of temperatures.

But the PL 240 is much quieter than my 240 AIO. But mine can glow in 16 million colors for that. Haha! Sarcasm aside! The be quiet! Pure Base 500 case offers everything you need for a PC. It has room for all standard components, offers good airflow and the possibility for neat cable management. The length of the GPU used in relation to the AIO installed in the front, was here from the space still sufficient. If you want to install a longer GPU, you have to move the AIO upwards or rely on an air cooler! If you want to install a custom water cooling or RGB components, you should look for another case here.

The MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk is a very good motherboard. Looking at the temperatures of the voltage converters at idle and under load (max. 58 °C), I find it impressive how MSI has improved here. The voltage converters of my MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon get up to 90 °C under such loads. The rest of the MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk’s features are more than sufficient for anyone who just needs an office and gaming machine.

The Ryzen 7 5800X is an 8-core beast to work with, giving the PowerColor RX 6800 Red Dragon maximum pixel yield even in 1080p. This graphics card from PowerColor is an absolute “hidden champion” for me personally. The cooler installed here, with its 3 fans, does an extremely good job and purely subjectively, this GPU gets a full buy recommendation from my side. If PowerColor reads this review, please send a test sample to Igor so he can take a closer look! The RX 6800 was a conscious decision on my part, as an RTX 3070 costs about the same as an RX 6800 at this point. However, an RX 6800 offers significantly more VRAM and if you don’t necessarily value “ray tracing”, then an RX 6800 is an absolutely future-proof sensible decision.

The SSDs from Samsung and Crucial are fully on par in terms of the scenarios that occur in everyday use (random read/write). Thus, if you do not transfer large amounts of data, you can choose a different SSD than the Samsung 970 EVO Plus in terms of price/performance ratio. (500 GB Samsung = 80 € vs. 1000 GB Crucial = 95 €) But I have to keep in mind that a cheap 500 GB M.2 SSD usually has much less TBW (total bytes written = SSD shelf life) The Crucial P2 500 GB has only 150 TB (terabyte) compared to the Samsung 500 GB 970 EVO Plus with 300 TB.

The RAM from G.Skill with its 3600 MHz CL16 in combination with the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X is a price-performance recommendation. The G.Skill Ram runs without problems on AMD based systems. Also on Ryzen 3000 and with 3200 MHz also on the older Ryzen 2000 models. So if you can do without a lot of RGB bling-bling and custom watercooling, I highly recommend such a configuration.

Except for the currently way too high prices, I can’t find fault with this system. The PC meets the requirements profile that I was given in all points. If you get the impression that I only have positive things to report and nothing to criticize, then I say to you: If you plan something and in the end everything turns out the way you wanted it to, what is there to complain about? Nothing 😀
