Fan bracket
So keeping hot exhaust air away from the hard disks is already a good approach, but can't it be a bit more … active? I had mentioned it in other articles on 3D printing, but I'm more into the hardware than the modeling in the various CAD applications. Fortunately, I have therefore stumbled across another mod for the O11D, which should solve exactly my problem here:
Unfortunately, this mount was designed for the O11 XL, which, contrary to expectations, uses a different cover than the O11 Dynamic. So there is no way around it, Fusion360 thrown on and laboriously incorporated.
To save filament, I printed only the frame at first to slowly work my way to the best shape, position the recesses for screw heads, and change the hook for snapping into the housing.
A first prototype was then eventually ready for full 3D printing, the bowl shape unfortunately needs quite a lot of support material.
With a good 5 hours and 30 minutes of printing time, you can devote yourself to other things for now. By the way, I also did the print with the support in the middle to get a nicer finish on the outside. The results were okay, but the printing time is extended by quite a bit. And to remove the material at the end has proved quite difficult. So rather print as shown at the beginning.
A few iterations of the prototype and improvements to the pressure profile later, I completed the final mount with a perfect fit to the case.
The range of 60mm fans that can be controlled via 4-pin PWM is unfortunately very small. The choice fell on two NF-A6x25 PWM, which I was kindly provided by Noctua.
Finally supplied with fans and the bracket looks quite neat, right? Conveniently, a Y-cable is also included so that the fans can be operated via one connection. Very practical, because that's exactly what I'm going to do.
Attached to the case, the bracket also looks good, here in the also tested variant with outward blowing fans.
So let's finally get to the results, first turned as an Intake fan:
And here still for comparison as Exhaust fan:
Now that's a really big temperature jump down! Despite the low speed and absolutely silent operation of the Noctua fans, even a small amount of airflow over the hard drives does quite a bit.
I provide the print files on the last page. But what do you do when there's no 3D printer available to solve your problems? I have another suggestion for this on the next page.
