Topaz Gigapixel AI
What Enhance AI is to video, Gigapixel AI is to images. Bigger, sharper and more detailed. Again, there are different methods that can be chosen depending on the content and are based on different AI models. For upscaling, I use the most brutal use case possible for me. I scale the images from my Sony A7R III to 200% once again. The used photo of a mountain massif (Alps) with many stones and rocky outcrops is extremely challenging.
Especially the Compressed mode for detailed original artwork takes a really long time, but it’s also worth it. By the way, I also use the program for crisp downscaling of my product images (like the graphics card images from the introduction) to only 2560 pixels wide for the website, without pixelated edges (resize) or blurred transitions (resample).
Topaz Denoise AI
The AI-based denoiser kicks in whenever you want to edit images with either noise or artifacts. Here, too, various AI-based models are used, from which you can select the most optimal one in each case. In this specific case, it is a previously upscaled night image of a smartphone shot with color noise that Gigapixel AI could not completely de-pixelate without, for example, the contours showing distortions.
Topaz Sharpen AI
The third and final program I use from my expensive Topaz subscription trap is Sharpen AI. I don’t want to advertise a software here in the test, also because of the subscription requirement for updates, which unfortunately follows the trend of online control, but would (if there is really interest), write a separate article about this AI-based software and its possibilities. With Sharpen AI, the name says it all and I use a picture where my son is lost in the bokeh of a product picture (set on purpose).
It’s just stupid when the AI then puts a spoke in the wheel of self-imposed personality protection and almost completely restores the face. Dumb luck and a valid reason for the renaissance of the infamous black face bars.
Adobe Lightroom Classic 11.4.1
I’m testing the AI-based image detail enhancer with 10 large images from a custom catalog. The function is effectively an AI-based mix of enhancer, sharpener and denoiser. And without specialized tensor cores, nothing works for the time being. At least not at this pace. But it would go meanwhile also on the Radeons and sleeper reservation. That’s the good news at the bottom of this page.
