Unreal Engine 4.26
Age-old wisdom: Game developers are usually less concerned about GPU performance than the gamers who then have to actually play the games. The benchmark consists of two parts and an overall score (Overall), which interests me the most here. The first part, GameDev, does not fill the VRAM too much. This sub-benchmark is more focused on rasterized workloads, but the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti’s lead is somewhat equal in both rasterized and ray-traced scenes.
The second sub-benchmark deals with virtual production. This ranges from simple scenes with minimal geometry and textures to cinema-quality assets that require large amounts of VRAM. The massive 24 GB of VRAM available with the RTX 3090 is just enough for high-end virtual production workflows. The content is geared towards ray tracing as well as 4k resolutions, with VRAM also playing a big role.
ArchViz – High texture count and resolution, highly detailed meshes, baked lighting
Megascans Apartment – High-end assets in game quality and lighting. Both with and without ray tracing
Megascans Temple – assets and textures in cinema quality. Numerous lights casting shadows. Raytracing. High VRAM usage
However, to save the honor of the expensive RTX A6000, we also have to note that the slightly faster RTX GeForce 3090 Ti FE still does not support Sync, so it is not a viable option for driving large-scale LED walls. However, it is a good option for artist workstations.
Inventor Pro 2022
Finally, a brief look at Inventor Pro, even though the target group would certainly be best served with much smaller and cheaper cards. The two-second difference in a project with 1000 elements can be easily overcome.
Also, the time needed to completely redraw the rotation around the own axis several times is not an argument for such a map in direct comparison. However, I deliberately included this benchmark in the test to also delimit the target group. Those who are in the area of Solidworks, Creo and Inventor Pro or AutoCAD will certainly prefer other maps. Either because he wants to or has to use certified hardware, or because it could certainly be three sizes smaller.
Power consumption
The power consumption of the unbraked card in Blender (CUDA) went up to almost 350 watts, in the Unreal benchmark it is 350 to 400 watts on average, depending on the benchmark part. But it never went much above 400 watts, only in the peaks. However, if you compare this with the variant braked to 300 watts and the RTX A6000, you quickly see that reason, energetic use and benefit drift apart strongly here. Both 300 watt cards are only marginally “slower” and yet need up to 30 percentage points less energy. In areas of AI computation (Topaz), it is often only the tensor cores that need to compute. The GeForce RTX 3090 Ti FE’s energy hunger is not quite as high then.
Summary and conclusion
Those who want to save an RTX A6000 in the studio are well served with the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti FE, even though it often seems oversized enough. However, those who want and need to look at time and productivity will also get there first with this beating of a graphics card. Whether it is then worth paying a disproportionate amount of money for it, he must clarify with himself. The fact is that the current price drop could certainly make some people think twice.
Who knows when and at what price the new cards will really reach the market in full bandwidth. The current Taiwan crisis should also not be completely lost sight of, because if even one domino topples over, the chain reaction could topple the entire market. I’d rather not think about it in depth. But sometimes it’s not so stupid to stock up just to be on the safe side, because you never know. I don’t consider myself a prepper or a fatalist either, but I did buy my own 2kW emergency generator just in case. Let’s best be positively surprised.
