A little over a year ago, I presented an ITX gaming system here whose case came entirely from the 3D printer. Since then there were from me now and then smaller topics in this direction, today I present you my next big project with a small footprint. However, instead of a gaming PC for your own leisure time, it becomes rather useful and practical. The title already gave it away, I printed a NAS for the home user.
If you don’t know my last article yet, you can read it here. And if you’re interested in 3D printing in general, you might want to check out my guide.

As with my last 3D-printed case, this article will again be a mix of review, buildlog, and DIY tutorial.
Background
I have to admit (ashamedly) that while I always preach the basic concept of the 3-2-1 backup strategy in a professional setting, I don’t use it myself in my personal life. “Do as I say, not as I do” or something like that. But I would like to have a certain minimum of security for my data, so I regularly back it up to a small DIY NAS. However, the 2TB HDDs installed there are slowly reaching their capacity limits with the amount of data to be backed up and the free slots are also running out. I’m well aware that I’ve hit a bit of a dead end with the 2TB HDDs in terms of expansion. But I already had several plates available and that’s why I kept using them.
So I thought about what would be the smartest way to proceed now. Selling all the disks and buying new, larger HDDs would be an idea, but time-consuming and comparatively expensive. So why not just build a second NAS and save half of the backups there in the future?
Are there other, perhaps even more sensible or better approaches? For sure! But tinkering around again was also tempting, the idea to implement the whole thing with a 3D printer came to me quite early. And how I implemented this project from the idea to the productive use, you can read on the following pages!
