Cost of housing
Of course, I can only give an approximate overview here and only for my printer, but to determine an approximate framework that is enough. I have calculated with the following variables here:
- Prusa MK3S 3D Printer
- 0.3mm Layerheight – 5% Infill – Supports when needed
- Prusament PETG (29,99€ / kg)
- Power consumption of 100 watts / hour – source
- Electricity price from 0,33€ / kWh – Source
I have come to the following conclusion:

The power consumption is of course averaged and the calculation is therefore not perfect, but at about 6.45 kWh and a price of 0.33€ / kWh you end up with only 2.12€. So in total this print cost me 38,86€. Let’s compare this with the offers that can be found in the normal trade. To do this, I filter for cases that support 4x 3.5″ HDDs and hold a maximum of one mATX motherboard:
=> Compare mATX cases at Geizhals.eu
With shipping, even the cheapest rattle-case is then already around 50€. And this is how it looks when you make a direct comparison with ITX cases to achieve a similar size:
=> Compare ITX cases at Geizhals.eu
There all the results even fit on one picture and three of the cases only show up because a second ITX system can be installed somewhere on the back besides the normal computer. In terms of price, you’re already looking at a good 90€ here, whereby the Node 304 can even hold 6 HDDs instead of just 4.
So if you add 1-2€ for the screws to the above costs for 3D printing, you are still a good deal ahead of even the cheapest and larger standard cases for an extremely small case. The required screws are then also the keyword for the next page, where I list what you then need for your own NAS in addition to the printed parts.
