When it comes to overclocking, the modules benefit from the BIOS updates that Asus has released for their Z790 motherboards almost every week since launch. Here we test with version 0813, which was also used to set the reference configs. The G.Skill Trident Z5 modules are the first that can catch up with our reference kit with Hynix A-Die memory modules in clock at 7800 Mbps. However, the modules scale noticeably better with the VDD voltage, so that some timings, such as tCL, can be set a tad tighter.
Primary timings of 32-46-40-34 at 1.65 V VDD and 1.6 VDDQ are really impressive for this clock rate, and mind you on a 4-DIMM motherboard. Such high voltages require active cooling, but are not dangerous for the life of the RAM modules per se. Unfortunately, in the validation run for the screenshot above, the SMBus driver is glitched, which is why no valid voltage values for the modules are displayed there – I noticed it too late, unfortunately.
The subtimings are also as tight or tighter as in our fastest reference configuration, which results in the best results in our benchmark tests for the overclocked configurations, that much I can say in advance. Above I have again directly put in the screenshot of the DDR5-7800 reference config with the SK Hynix “Green Sticks” for a direct comparison of the timings.
