The order: crystal ball for 6,48 Euro
An illuminated heart ball for your sweetheart? Let’s just do that, because to order only trinkets, of which you know beforehand how it will turn out, is also bland and dull. RGB make light as never and if it is in the ball universe.
Unpacking and testing
So let’s unpack the sphere. If necessary, I can still use it as a glass ball for leaks if the wife doesn’t like the gift. There is a glass ball with laser engraving, a stand made of bamboo with LED and soldered cable. That’s all you need.
The interior with the paper “circuit board” is arg rustic, but well, the price. The color changer sits right inside the diode, very handy. The two knobs are hot glue and apart from that there is nothing else to admire for now. Auer the lousy paint job with an ugly stain. But ok, that is thankfully only at the back.
Let’s connect this to the 5 volts and yes, the diode lights up and nothing sizzles or burns. Now all that’s left is to put on the heavy bullet….
And the bullet heart is ready! Ok, about the price you can argue, but who stands on such a decoration, who will like it.
You can also turn off the light in the room and be quietly happy about the heart (which was the point of the action). Fits already.
Processing and material
The surface of the glass cone still looks pretty decent even at 2000x magnification. So that fits for a start. But what is in the glass and what is not?
In addition to the normal sand as the base material, there are traces of sodium, which first of all indicates normal soda-lime glass. The slight traces of potassium then indicate an improvement in the chemical properties, but could also be residues from another melt. In the end, it is quite simple bulk glass, but in nice round.
And after the transparent part would be clarified, I look again at the paper board, respectively the existing solder joints.
And lo and behold, once again I found what I was looking for! ROHS compliant is different and this looks almost like pure lead. Are they all insane? I later quickly tested the rest and it is definitely a lead-tin solder with extremely high lead content.
Conclusion
Should my wife die of lead poisoning now? Ok, you don’t have to eat the board, but regulations remain regulations. And that’s why there’s only an ok and no thumbs up. I think I’d better keep the lead thing to myself, otherwise I won’t have a present again.
