The order: Neon light for 6,48 Euro
Light up stuff? I’ve never been able to resist that, as long as the color matches the company. Joking aside, the price fits, even if it is of course no longer cold cathodes. Still looks pretty good for not even seven euros and costs significantly more in Germany. Sure, this isn’t a high-end light, but the price….
Unpacking and testing
We get the light along with a long, reasonably unobtrusive cable, battery box and USB plug, and an adhesive hook. Well, all this is not rocket science, but it looks usable at first. Except for the hook, but I’ll get to that in a moment.
If you don’t want to use a USB port, you can also optionally power it all with three AAA batteries, which also have an on/off switch. Not a bad idea in principle, but purely electrically the whole thing is a bit risky. That’s because there’s no diode to protect these alkaline batteries from the USB voltage when battery mode is on. This becomes parallel operation despite resistance. If USB, then definitely without batteries inserted.
Yes, there is a catch to this whole thing, a sticky one at that. One should not take the sticking too seriously. The adhesive surface does not stick to woodchip or paint, but at most to acrylic paints or smooth surfaces like tiles. Here I also relied on the good old nail. And? It holds!
The start-up is simple. Plug it in and the part lights up. This goes even quite evenly, despite a single LED.
When you have hung it up, you can be happy when the lightning strikes above you. Even the Nubi falls over with envy and lies flat (right speaker box). Ok, that was probably the bad bass again…
Workmanship and material
First, let’s look at the light bar and see the quite uniform structure under 300x magnification. After all, I wrote that the luminosity distribution worked out quite well.
Organic compounds are difficult to classify using LIBS, but let’s note the slightly lower carbon content of the relatively soft material.
The cover is a little harder and also has a slightly different structure. The coloring is not particularly homogeneous, but oh well.
The carbon content is much higher here, which also makes it clear that this is something different. But even now I reach the limits, because I can’t dissolve molecules. I can only search for things that perhaps don’t belong in them. But in this respect I can give the all-clear.
Conclusion
For this price, it’s okay. Well, alkaline batteries should not be left in the box during USB operation, but with a little bit of brains, everyone can figure it out. The light fits into the category “can be done” and it doesn’t even look that bad.
