Even though Intel is currently being celebrated for the new BIOS profiles for CPUs from Raptor Lake onwards on all the Z790 mainboards – has anyone ever asked themselves what will happen to the Z690 mainboards, which are also compatible? There’s nothing yet, nothing has been announced and you slowly get the impression that those involved want to put the whole thing to sleep or simply sit it out if necessary. I don’t think it’s sustainable or fair to the users to offer such a half-baked solution at all.
Parallel to the current AI benchmarks with 12 graphics cards from the professional and consumer sector, I have therefore pulled myself together and tested an Intel Core i9-13900K on a Z690 board. Interestingly, I’m using the exact BIOS that was provided to me for the RPL S Launch and the two profiles for the boxed and tower cooler as well as the new settings for Recommended and Extreme on the Z790 boards. If there is still some time left, then the more economical baseline profile with 188 watts will also be a topic, which Intel lists as “n/a” in its current slides for the K-CPUs.
And don’t worry, there won’t be the usual gaming, others have already done that or are working on it, there’s no need to do the 1001st test. I’m also deliberately leaving out the annoying Cinebench because it’s just a gimmick. On the other hand, I use full versions of Creo, AutoCAD and Inventor Pro, AI benchmarks for the CPU, workstation benchmarks for scientific calculations and the IgoBot in Blender as well as some CAD applications where the highest possible IPC is important. A single run costs almost a day, but it’s well worth it to me.
Once again for a better understanding: No one with a good Z690 board has ever thought about doing an expensive sidegrade to Z790, what for? To simply ignore this very large number of users and pretend that the problem does not also exist on these boards is, in my opinion, quite unworldly and almost arrogant towards those who do not want to or cannot follow every new upgrade move. It really isn’t rocket science to change a few values and adapt the profiles accordingly. But since this has neither been announced nor has it happened yet, one could even suspect a certain method behind it.
I think we’ll be smarter after this test, also in terms of the actual performance differences between the individual profiles. I’ll be particularly interested in the two boxed cooler profiles, but I don’t want to spoil anything just yet. Just a quick sign of life from me, in case anyone is wondering why it’s been quiet in the Top Story box so far this weekend. The reason is simple: I’m currently heating all-electric on three systems in parallel.
