Summary and conclusion
I think it’s obvious that Geekom has reused practically everything from the A7 here and the A8, apart from the CPU. No problem, right? Maybe it is, if you take a look at our overview of the benchmarks:

Because the 8945HS doesn’t really end up where you’d expect: Invariably at the top. Instead, it is often just behind its predecessor, the A7, even if the results are of course very good. The reason for this can be seen quite clearly in the average FPS values over the course of three runs:
Game |
Run #1 |
Run #2 |
Run #3 |
CSGO |
225.48 FPS |
170.07 FPS |
161.54 FPS |
GTA5 |
146.50 FPS |
138.36 FPS |
130.69 FPS |
R6S |
181.48 FPS |
122.22 FPS |
119.66 FPS |
The A8 runs out of breath in the long run – or to put it more accurately – its cooling capacity. And so the Ryzen 9 8945HS has to be throttled, which of course has an effect on the available performance. In the BIOS, the fan is already in performance mode ex works, so there is nothing more that can be teased out. An opening in the lid would certainly work wonders.
Squeezing such a powerful processor into a small housing can probably only succeed if the fan is given direct access to plenty of fresh air. Visually, the A8 looks really great, but the many small holes on the sides are the only way to supply air.

A full scan with Windows Defender revealed no findings, so there are more than just criticisms. Also, the 5.1 watts at idle under Windows 11 is phenomenal for the entire system with a 16 thread CPU! At the time of publication, Geekom is asking 759 euros for the version with Ryzen 98845HS, 32GB DDR5 and a 1TB SSD. In my opinion, the extra 140 euros to 900 euros for the model with the only marginally better8945HS, 32GB DDR5 and 2TB SSD is not worth it. In general, these mini PCs in the upper price range have a hard time competing with notebooks in terms of price, and then there are also latent cooling problems. On paper, we are looking at the most powerful mini PC on the market, but in practice it may need a revision 2 with an adapted casing. Until then, the A7 seems to be the better choice.
The test sample was provided by Geekom without obligation. There was and is no influence on the tests and results. There was also no compensation for expenses and no obligation to publish.
