iCUE Software
I have already discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the different software solutions several times. One disadvantage of the iCUE software, which spans all devices, is its sheer size. The download is over 800 MB in size, and the installed program later costs as much as 1.3 GB. A good 50 MB are stored in the RAM and a double-digit number of Corsair and iCUE services are executed – that’s quite a house number and can even be reflected in benchmark results!
Unfortunately, there is an annoying bug in the iCUE software since quite a few versions, which you have to “ignore” several times during the installation routine. I have not yet been able to verify whether it is the installer or my PC. In any case, the installed program runs later without problems and does not throw around error messages.
As far as the operation is concerned, everything has remained the same. On the start page of the software, you can find the profile selection, the read sensor values and the overview of the connected Corsair devices.
If we select the keyboard, we are automatically in the lighting menu. Here, a whole 20 layers can be created per profile, which means that there are virtually no limits to your own imagination. I really like the fact that you can assign separate effects to different buttons/ranges, because God knows not all RGB controllers are that flexible.
In the key assignment we can freely assign all keys. In addition to the usual functions, ready-made actions such as “Text” are of course also available again macros. New in the current software is the so-called Voicemod, with which you can also switch on voice distortion etc.. However, it would simply go beyond the scope of this article to present all of this in its entirety.
In the “Options” menu item we can select the properties of the special keys. For example, when the WIN-LOCK key is activated, you can select whether other key combinations such as Alt+F4 should perhaps be deactivated in addition to the name-giving lock of the Windows key, and in which color the keys should light up (indicator) when the functions are de-/activated.
Finally, in the Device Settings item, you can configure things like the sample rate and debounce time, or check for firmware updates.
At sample rates above 1000 Hz, the software warns of increased CPU utilization, which could possibly also lead to a measurable performance loss on weaker systems. However, this should not have any effect on current gaming machines.
