Functionality and typing feel
Dedicated special or macro keys are of course not available in such a compact layout, apart from the FN key for layer changes and combinations. Many adjustments can also be made directly from the keyboard, including lighting. But until you have memorized all the shortcuts, you should keep the following overview handy.
And these are only the key combinations for special functions, for reasons of space all other keys apart from the letters can only be reached in a roundabout way. I must admit that it was not easy for me to work productively with the keyboard, especially in the beginning.
The already mentioned multiple assignment and labeling of each key can be quite confusing. And as if that wasn’t enough, they’ve also squeezed in the layout for Mac / iOS! This leads to the fact that keycaps sometimes have 5 (!) characters on them and duplications occur. Is the volume up/down symbol at point and comma the right one or the one at F11 and F12?
Even after a bit of training, I get the feeling that there are just too many functions and options crammed into a small keyboard, but I’m well aware that avid users of 60% keyboards aren’t afraid of many input layers and you can certainly get used to it. So this comment is meant to be more of a hint, not a criticism of the keyboard itself. For me personally, however, especially the work in Excel was so exhausting that I took another keyboard in the meantime. However, writing texts or playing games is possible without any problems.
Depending on the application, it’s a nice extra feature to be able to switch between up to three Bluetooth devices at the touch of a button. And you can also quickly switch between the Mac and Windows layouts, with an LED briefly indicating the respective status. Pairing works just like any other device, just click connect and type code. Under Windows, the keyboard also reports its battery status immediately.
Mechanical low-profile Red switches from TTC with linear characteristics are installed. This manufacturer was previously unknown to me, but also seems to be the OEM behind the switches of the already tested Roccat Vulcan Pro. Since there was no further information about the switches on Cooler Master’s site, I dug through the Chinese manufacturer’s site a bit and eventually stumbled upon the correct product page. 3.2mm total travel, triggering after only 1.2mm. With the 45 cN actuation force, you then have the exact same specs as MX Cherry LP Red switches, if anyone can make a comparison.
It is very pleasant to write on the SK622, even though the keys are very close together. Key wobble is minimal and I didn’t notice it negatively while writing. Due to the flat design, I didn’t miss a palm rest either, the table or deskpad is actually sufficient. It should be noted, however, that the N-Key rollover is only active in Bluetooth mode, according to a PM at Cooler Master it is not technically possible otherwise. This manifests itself when playing in cable mode in that you can’t press W + D at the same time, but W + A works.
However, the wireless mode then has a significantly lower polling rate of 125 Hz than the wired mode with 1000 Hz. The difference on paper can also be felt in reality, albeit less drastically. If the connection is stable, you will notice a certain delay at the beginning, but you will quickly get used to it. Problems only arise when the distance to the computer is somewhat greater or the connection is partially blocked.
Significant delays between keystroke and reaction, completely missing or multiple inputs I had but only when between my system and the keyboard the testbench interfered. An update of the firmware from V0120 to V0410 and a change of the other system then fixed the problem. This suggests that the low-power Bluetooth 4.0 signal needs as direct a path as possible, without obstructions, to the computer in order to work properly.
After an adjustable period of time, the keyboard goes into sleep mode, turning off the backlight and Bluetooth. If you then press a button, it wakes up and reconnects. This happens quickly, but of course not without a little delay. At 30% remaining battery capacity, the RGB LEDs are also switched off and the small indicator LED for the battery on the Caps button flashes red.
