Aircooling CPU Gaming Reviews Watercooling Workstations

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX and 2950X in review – Real progress with up to 32 cores

In the case of gaming benchmarks, I chose Full HD for the known reasons, but adjusted the settings upwards, as the graphics card used is on the one hand loosely able to represent this without real limitation and on the other hand not a buyer of such CPUs will play such games in 720p. In the end, the whole thing is also a compromise, especially since some of the features can also generate a little more CPU load with the maximum settings.

If you miss the solo graphics per CPU (frametimes, unevenness, variances) this time, be reassured. I am currently rebuilding the interpreter software to work parallel with percentiles in low-level measurements and to connect and optimize everything graphically. Therefore, the bar graphics no longer contain Min-FPS, but already the new view. Incidentally, this also applies to the FPS history curves, which I will change again later. That is why this time we have to get along with the somewhat less extensive actual status, but this one too is quite meaningful.

Civization VI

Especially the Ryzen Threadripper 2950X can keep up with activated PBO and also shows good performance with the percentiles (also in direct comparison to the Core i7-8700K). Compared to the old Threadripper CPUs, the increase in performance is also really significant.

Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War III

Here, the difference between generation one and two is not quite as high, but this trend is at least continuing. It's also not something that wouldn't have been really smooth playable. Intel leads, but not in the way you might have feared. Intel's Core i9 is also always within range.

Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5 also shows no negative abnormalities. On the contrary, because Intel's Gamer all-purpose weapon Core i7-8700K even has to leave feathers here. However, the test also shows that the many cores of the Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX are probably somewhat in each other's way and, above all, the beat is not quite enough to set standards. With PBO, things are suddenly much better.

GTA V

The beat makes the music, but not only. The thread rippers of the latest generation can perform neatly, especially with PBO, even if it is not enough for the crown in the end. The two predecessors are clearly in the back of the participants.

Hitman (2016)

With Hitman, the image is similar, but the older thread rippers with manual overclocking still save themselves quite neatly over time. Without extra clock, however, they are the two taillights. Once again.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Chic, there's something going on! What is particularly interesting here is that both the Ryzen 2700X and the Intel Core i7-8700K are behind, even if the overall differences are not as extreme as in many other benchmarks.

Project Cars 2

Now the two old thread rippers get the red lantern hung over again. The rest looks like it's been seen so many times.

Synthetic benchmarks

Finally, two synthetic benchmarks confirming the general picture. Overclocking always brings advantages, but it must also give the cooling.

Intermediate conclusion

Not bad, Mr Specht! Compared to the first generation, these two bolts are also a real step forward in gaming and noble streamers can look forward to it. The distance to Intel's multi-cores has narrowed, and in some situations AMD is slightly ahead even in comparable CPUs. That we can experience this again…

An experience of a different kind and very reassuring, the competition enlivens the business! You can see it in the prices, thank you for that! And in addition to the good gaming performance, these 16- and 32-coreers also have quite different advantages, which should certainly not be inconvenient as added value besides the pure zigzagging. That's exactly what we're going to do on the next pages when it comes to productive use.
