Grayscale, color fidelity and gamut to factory settings
According to MSI, the MEG381CQR+ does not come pre-calibrated from the factory. At this MSRP? The MEG381CQR+ given to me by MSI for testing purposes is a real color performance beast. I can say that right away, and it matches the experiences of other testers. So it’s not a coincidence! But one after the other. MSI supplies the MEG381CQR+ with an sRGB mode “out of the box”.
The slider “SDR Colors sRGB” is on after unpacking and switching on. Thus, the monitor runs directly on a pre-set: sRGB, gamma 2.2, brightness 200 nits and color temperature “normal”.
Don’t worry, the panel can do more. Still to come! The best thing about the “build in” sRGB mode, you can still adjust everything in user mode. There is full access to everything – what the monitor can do. That’s how you have to deliver a monitor to the customer today. You have to be grateful to MSI for that. Besides the ASUS (PG279QM), the second monitor I test that delivers something like this. We’ll soon see how well the MEG381CQR+ delivers.
Gray Scale
Except for the CCT, this is a really impressive result. I have to take my hat off to that. The monitor can also deliver the advertised 1000:1 contrast (with a little wink). The white point is the only weakness.
Here is the protocol to read: (The whole thing is interactive, you can play around in the menu above)
Measurement Report 3.8.9.3 – MEG381CQR + @ 3840×1600 Gray Scale Factory sRGB Mode
ColorChecker
What more can I say? The deviations are marginal, as can be seen from the delta E 2000 of 1.49. If MSI delivers all MEG381CQR+ like this, then I can only say: Thank you! And, if your devices deviate more? Thanks to the non-locked sRGB / wide gamut panel, you can calibrate it excellently.
Here is still the protocol to read:

Display brightness
The MEG381CQR+ gets very bright already in SDR mode…. The sun can shine through the window. I measure the brightness in the factory setting before calibrating the monitor to 200 nits.
Who likes it really dark? I hope that’s enough…
What you can get out of the panel with a calibration, you will see in a moment…
