Summary and conclusion
Intel charges about 150 Euros more for a new, extremely selected i9-12900KS CPU. And even if the selection is not immediately noticeable in the VID table and the SP value, a more consistent quality can be seen relatively quickly when looking at larger quantities, in the P and E cores, but also in the DDR5 memory controller – “KS” as in “Quality Control” (the joke works better in German).
Now Intel has probably turned a few more screws in the background to refine the CPU and is maybe even already trying out some improvements for the upcoming 13th Raptor Lake generation. Besides the now higher clocks from the factory, the IHS and the specified cooling solution have also been slightly revised. Furthermore, the cores of 12900KS CPUs have significantly larger voltage reserves below the VID table specified by Intel and thus a significantly larger OC potential.

So is the 12900KS now the perfect CPU for overclockers and benchmarkers, as unreasonable as it may be in terms of price and power consumption? There is still one small but noteworthy change: KS CPUs unfortunately don’t support AVX-512 at all anymore. While the instruction set can still be activated with special microcodes in earlier K and KF chips, the feature is now completely deactivated on the silicon level. This means significantly less computing power in some benchmarks and applications, which cannot be easily compensated for even with 200-300 MHz more clock.
For me personally, this was exactly the reason for not buying a 12900KS CPU at first. Where is the point of a CPU that has already been binned higher by Intel, if it is then made more inefficient again afterwards by disabling an instruction set? Of course, there are also benchmarks where a blunt clock advantage pays off, but that alone seems particularly unreasonable as a justification for buying. Whether the finer selection and the higher clock reserves alone justify the purchase price of 830 Euros in the end is something every enthusiast has to answer for themselves.
