Power consumption and temperatures
Let’s now move on to a test field where we measure the power consumption. This consumed power is almost completely converted into heat, so the resulting temperatures of the chip allow direct conclusions about the cooling system’s performance.
The power consumption in hardware-accelerated FullHD videos with active post-processing turned out a bit too high for our taste, but all comparable cards with this chip probably have this problem at the moment.
Since this is a very flat card, there is relatively little space left for the cooler surface and the fan. Let’s now look at how the card copes with the heat to be dissipated:
A maximum of 71°C in the stress test and a gaming-typical 62-64°C are a very good result, which promises a lot of potential for the hot season. However, we will now next question what noise level is created to achieve this performance in the end.
Volume
The values measured at a constant room temperature of 22°C now ruthlessly reveal the problems of the single-slot design. Something over 42 dB(A) for the hardware-accelerated video output is actually already far too much and thus disqualifies this card very clearly for use in an HTPC in its original state. However, you can quickly push this value below 39 dB(A) with a manually adjusted fan curve, if you can live with chip temperatures of plenty of 80°C and make sure that the room temperature doesn’t exceed 25°C. Otherwise, it gets loud again.
What is still blown away by the fan’s wind in a melodrama is quickly forgotten in gaming, because the values determined in gaming are bearable when the in-game sound is rendered with a certain minimum level. However, the clearly over 50 dB during the stress test are really annoying and also demonstrate the limits of the design.
