Let’s now move on to the seventh card, whose cooler I examined in more detail. The card was purchased in September 2021 and was initially run in a pure copper loop (CPU block, Alphacool radiators) with distilled water and XSPC EC6 Biocide. When the first signs of corrosion appeared, a switch to Aqua Computer’s DP Ultra was made. In the following, we thus see a condition after approx. 5 months and normal use, whereby the water circuit has already been cleaned once after approx. 3 months.
I disassembled the cooler and also subjected it to various material samples, as a result of which it also became clear why some cards had turquoise deposits and e.g. my specimen rather brownish ones. But I’ll come back to that later. For now, here are the pictures of the superficially cleaned heat sink, which already bears slight scratch and test marks, which were subsequently created by the user and in the laboratory.
In the course of the whole action, I also took a closer look at the left heatpipe in particular, whose bending has been done in such a rustic way that the functionality is at least severely limited. You simply can’t do something like that, and we’re back to the aforementioned monoblock, which would certainly have made more sense.
But back to the cooler and the clogged microchannels. Despite the best coolant and a cleaning in the meantime, as well as the change to DP Ultra, massive deposits occurred here again, which should not have existed in this way.
Apart from the fact that the placement of the in-takes and out-takes in the acrylic was solved rather suboptimally for reasons of appearance and low cost, the tool marks of the machining are also still clearly visible. Such grooves and burrs virtually provoke a deposit and are also a dangerous attack surface for incipient corrosion. Finally, let’s take a look at all of this under a simple microscope:
Apart from the terrible manufacturing quality of the block: The color also really made me think and prompted me to take a closer look at the anodized block as well. Please turn the page!
