The non-cannibal with higher octane for the brain: GeForce GTX 1660 Super with three cards in the test

All super, or what?  You can turn it around and turn it as you like – currently Nvidia is in charge in this high-turnover performance class. The RX 5500 Series is unfortunately still quark in Lisa's shop window and with all the cards, superlatives and upgrade shortcuts in the super-green selection box you can lose the thread quite quickly. This also affects customers to an even greater extent, who no longer see through the whole range of names and variants. But even that can be intentional, in the SI business this is nothing new.

As beautiful as a Radeon RX 580 was then and so acceptable the more drink-loving sister RX 590, it is time for AMD to send the Polaris cards into well-deserved retirement. The 240 watts of the Red Devil from the test and corresponding soundscape were almost annoying compared to the 100 watt more economical GTX 1660 Super, even if many argue with the price. But Polaris had his time, at some point it has to stop, as hard as it is. Time for the RX 5500 Series, which unfortunately has been postponed to December once again.

Is AMD waiting to see if you have anything to counter, or are you just so late? You will notice exactly this later on in the power consumption of the small navigation maps, i.e. whether they were trimmed again afterwards in the direction of performance or not. With the Radeon RX 480 you could see exactly this effect as a tedious counter to Nvidia, but then you simply didn't have time to replace the 6-pin connection with an 8-pin connector. The consequences are well known.

Yes, the GeForce GTX 1660 Super is finally what a normal GTX 1660 should never be: a tracking chewing gum on the hack of the GTX 1660 Ti that you just can't get rid of. In terms of price, you will have to see where the street offers are still going, you are not really so much higher at the launch than with the then unsuperped map. The question of the other cards and their meaning still has to be asked. A GTX 1660 Ti is priced due to the manageable speed advantage and the non-inflated GTX 1660 becomes less attractive. The customer is spoilt for choice again and for a few more weeks no alternative.

The thing with the price point models, where each manufacturer must offer at least one model for the EIA (or below) is also such a thing. Because such a mild factory OC, which dissolves into nothingness when the cards warm up, is not really an incentive to put the few euros on the table for it. Because before Afterburner & Co. are then all the same again. More or less. If there are any real differences, it's the flagships, which aren't really faster, but offer more features and should be quieter.

The Palit and Gainward models tested today fit the price point and even a little below it. The cheapest card, the Gainward GTX 1660 Super Pegasus, is even a really nice story for ITX friends who don't want to push the big gaming ball and for the time being, the Palit GTX 1660 GamingPro, which doesn't even have to be the OC, is enough. All three cards tested actually do exactly what they are supposed to do. No more, but no less.

Parallel to this launch, Nvidia has a whole package of driver improvements at hand, as well as ReShade and various filters – right down to Sharpening. Here I like to refer to the separate article "Upgraded by Graphics Driver: NVIDIA Supports ReShade and Image Sharpening", which provides more details about Nvidia's new features for future graphics card generations.  This also applies to G-Sync and low-latency mode, which you can read in more detail in the article "Never Tearing Again: New NVIDIA Driver Supports Ultra-Low Latency Mode under G-SYNC".

And of course Nvidia still has one, because the TU-116 can be shortened even further. And so, logically, a GeForce GTX 1650 Super will be added to the shelves this year as another derivative, which will not rely on the TU-117, but will become an even more slimmed-down Ex-GTX 1660. This means that the naming scheme is actually completely exhausted, whereby you could also use Mega, Ultra and Hyper. Read more here: "NVIDIA Announces GeForce GTX 1650 Super for the End of the Year". But that really has to be enough now, otherwise my head is still shaking.
