Sound Impression
Watch out, we’re about to dive deep into the sound world of the Edifier QD35 (even if much of it is rather shallow water) and what it whispers (or roars) monaurally into our ears. I already said it on page one: analog cables are so 2000s, so the Ü60 party for mobilists. Therefore, welcome to the age of Bluetooth 5.3! This little marvel even transmits through walls and over long distances, because… why not? And if your smartphone is fancy and smart enough, you can use the snazzy LDAC codec. That then results in a sparkling Hi-Res Wireless logo on the app as a reward. Just like a gold star in elementary school. Super job! Bee one!
Speaking of “Hi-Res Audio” – it really does say that on the Edifier QD35. Almost like a tramp stamp, only less painful. The sound range? A rocking bandwidth of 60 to 40000 Hz is written in the specs. That promises a real show, except that the reality is of course slightly different, because you can’t reinvent physics. And who is on stage? A 1″ tweeter with 15W and its buddy, the mid-bass driver with 3″ and 25 watts. Together they give a concert with 40 watts RMS. At least on paper. Well, for a room with 15 to 20 m², the duo is still quite sufficient in mono. The volume staircase offers a proud 16 steps to impress the neighbors, or just chill quietly. Despite the disco look, you shouldn’t use it for a house party – the bass would sound more like a pajama party. No, there are physical limits here.
And that with the sound taste is like the discussion about the best ice cream – super subjective and in the end there’s a spanking. But how does the Edifier QD35 sound now and what can the sound presets do? Sometimes they are so subtle that you think they are playing hide and seek. The bass? Hmmm, let’s say it at least tries. It’s like the guy who really, really wants to dance well at the party, but sometimes just gets out of sync. But it’s the will that counts!
When it comes to sound, the Edifier QD35 apparently thought, “I’m going all in on midrange and upper bass!” At first, it sounds like an elephant trying to bounce on a trampoline – impressive, but at the same time you’re waiting for something to go wrong. With songs that scream for deep bass, you quickly realize: our elephant can’t dive at all and the trampoline was probably ordered from Wish after all. TÜV Rheinland and all that. Deep bass? Depending on the song, it sounds as if someone is playing a big drum in the background… or the drum is just falling over. From level 12 to 13, the Edifier then goes into disco mode and shows you how you can really hook off and lose the pain-distorted face. Distortion factor rules!
Summary and conclusion
However, it does a really good job with everyday background music. However, you shouldn’t expect a musical accolade or bass that will knock your shoes off in the basement. The sound? More like a cozy, small room than a large dance hall. The all-important question: Is the Edifier QD35 worth its price? Hmm, I’m a bit split on that one. It feels like it’s in a talent contest and comes in second place, but then scores two extra points due to its looks and pulls even.
The part polarizes and that’s a good thing in a market with increasingly interchangeable and boring products. The QD35 is not monotonous, only single-channel. But you can easily get over that. Thanks to the app! The 120 euros I found as the street price is available from the Otto Kluge schop on Amazon and that is completely ok. If you have an appetite for this little alien, you are welcome to search for it in the river. As always, I don’t have an Amazon link.
